PLENARY: Teacher Training in ICT in ELT: the LEAP Approach

ABSTRACT: With the advent of technology, teachers should play the role of interface between technologies and digital natives. This is not an easy undertaking as many teachers are digital immigrants who work in places that need adequately defined policies of ICT implementation. This talk intends to show the teachers’ vital role in effective integration of ICT in ELT, especially in contexts where ICT is far from being normalized. It also describes some challenges teachers face with particular focus on the shortage of digital contents and on the complexity created by the wide range of available technologies.  To overcome some of these challenges, this paper suggests the LEAP (literacy – efficacy – appropriation – proficiency) approach to gradually making ICT an integral part of teachers’ practices.  This approach is basically meant to train teachers in technology for the purpose of boosting pedagogy.

PLENARY: Gamification: A Way to Hook Digital Natives

ABSTRACT: Today's "digital natives" have grown up with video and computer games, and they look for excitement. The fast pace of many games fits their short attention spans. The concept of "gamification" - using game elements to motivate and persuade - is moving from marketing to teaching. While games have long been part of a language teacher's bag of tricks, teachers can benefit from learning about the elements of games that will help us appeal to today's learners.

WORKSHOP: Trace Effects: A Computer Game (and more!) for the English Teaching Classroom
Trace Effects is a 3-D virtual reality game that was designed for English language learners. It looks and plays like a computer game, but it has an emphasis on appropriate use of language and on American culture from a young adult perspective. The game also includes language practice exercises based on elements from the game, multi-player games, a dictionary, graphic novels for each chapter, and certificates for completing each chapter. The Trace Effects Teacher Set includes not only a CD version of the game (for those with inconsistent Internet access) but also an extensive Teacher's Manual, a DVD video of the game, and resources for building on the game in the classroom. This workshop will demonstrate ways to exploit the game in the classroom.
